How to preserve EVERYTHING your tiny homestead produces just like our grandparents - without electricity

Inside The Self-Sufficient Backyard, we will show you everything we do to preserve our food: from eggs to vegetables, roots, fruits, meats… everything we produce, we preserve.

We had no other option. In the long winters of Saskatchewan, we had nowhere to go to buy groceries and supplies. If we didn’t preserve the things we produced, we wouldn’t have thrived there.

Preserving everything without electricity can be a challenging task, as electricity is commonly used for various preservation methods like refrigeration, freezing, canning, and drying. However, of course The Self-Sufficient Backyard come to the rescue and give you the solutions.

Here are the glimpses of  alternative methods you can consider for preserving different types of items without electricity:

1. Food Preservation:
  • Canning: Use traditional canning methods by sterilizing jars, filling them with prepared food, and sealing them with lids. Boiling water bath canning or pressure canning can help preserve a variety of foods.
  • Drying: Sun-drying, air-drying, or using a dehydrator powered by alternative energy sources like solar energy can help preserve fruits, vegetables, herbs, and even meat.
  • Fermentation: Fermenting foods like vegetables, sauerkraut, kimchi, and pickles can extend their shelf life. Fermentation also enhances their nutritional value.

2. Refrigeration and Cooling:
  • Root Cellar: Digging a root cellar or using an existing cool underground space can help keep fruits, vegetables, and certain perishables at a cool temperature.
  • Cooling with Water: Use evaporative cooling techniques, like a zeer pot (pot-in-pot refrigerator), which uses evaporation to keep items cool.

3. Medicine Preservation:
  • Herbal Drying: Dry medicinal herbs and plants for use in teas, infusions, or other remedies.
  • Alcohol Extraction: Certain medicinal plants can be preserved in alcohol to create tinctures, which have a longer shelf life.

Other than the solutions mentioned above, The Self-Sufficient Backyard have provided way moreeee than these! You can also get all the details inside the book. Click here to know more about what will you find in The Self-Sufficient Backyard and I guarantee that you will not regret once you got it!
